Policy distortions and aggregate productivity with endogenous establishment-level productivity

چکیده
What accounts for income per capita and total factor productivity (TFP) differences across countries? We study resource misallocation heterogeneous production units in a general equilibrium model where establishment size are affected by policy distortions. solve the closed form show that distortions have substantial negative effect on growth, average size, aggregate productivity. Calibrating distorted benchmark economy to U.S. data, we find empirically reasonable variations generate reductions TFP of more than 24 percent while slightly increasing concentration distribution. If addition lower exit rate incumbent establishments, as supported some empirical evidence, loss doubles 48 percent.

Endogenous depreciation, mismeasurement of aggregate capital, and the productivity slowdown
When we allow capital depreciation to be endogenous, the acceleration of investment-specific technological progress can distort the measurement of the aggregate capital stock. Our quantitative exercise shows that this effect may cause a substantial bias in the measurement of total factor productivity and can account for a large portion of the observed productivity slowdown since the 1970s. 2006...

Developing countries typically exhibit small firm size, high dispersion of firm-level productivity, and low trade-to-output ratios. They also tend to export particularly less to more distant and smaller markets. To rationalize these facts, this paper develops a flexible, multi-country general equilibrium model of production and trade in which heterogeneous producers face both domestic size-depe...

متن کاملInformation, Misallocation and Aggregate Productivity
We explore the implications of imperfect information about firm-level fundamentals for the misallocation of factors of production across heterogeneous firms and the consequences for aggregate productivity and output. In our setup, firms learn from both private sources and stock market prices, the latter determined in a noisy rational expectations model of asset markets. We devise a novel calibr...
متن کاملEndogenous Growth, Productivity and Economic Policy: A Progress Report
THE NEW “ENDOGENOUS” GROWTH theory that was spawned by the contributions of Romer (1986) and Lucas (1988) has now largely displaced the old neoclassical growth theory of Solow (1956) and Swan (1956) from the frontiers of academic research. But endogenous growth theory vintage 2004 is different in many respects from vintage 1988. These differences are the result of a fruitful interaction that ha...
